MR arthrogram

Clinical Department

MR arthrogram

Description

An arthrogram involves an injection of iodinated and MRI contrast medium (dye) into your joint before an MRI scan.

The injection is performed with local anaesthetic and under x-ray guidance. The arthrogram injection usually takes 20-30 minutes. After the arthrogram injection, patients are taken to the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for a scan.

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field to produce high quality, cross sectional images of internal body structures. It can take 30-60 minutes depending on which joint will be scanned.

The MR arthrogram is performed by a radiographer and your results are reported by a Consultant Radiologist, who will then write a report on the findings. This should reach your referring doctor within 24-48 hours.
