Services

Endoscopy services

Our Direct Access Endoscopy service is available five days a week and same day procedures can be arranged.  Our diagnostic services include:

  • Capsule endoscopy: a procedure using a pill-sized capsule to wirelessly transmit images of the stomach and digestive system
  • Carbon 13 urea breath test: used to detect the presence of bacteria uniquely associated with many stomach disorders
  • Colonoscopy:  examines the large bowel (colon) and the distal part of the small bowel with a fibre optic camera on a flexible tube which is carefully passed through the anus. It may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and allows for biopsy or removal of suspected lesions
  • Colorectal cancer screening: can detect cancer, polyps (collections of abnormal tissue which can lead to cancer), non-polypoid lesions, which are flat or slightly depressed areas of abnormal cell growth, and other conditions
  • Flexible cystoscopy: an examination of the bladder, using a very fine, flexible fibre optic, telescopic tube, which is passed through the urethra (the channel to the bladder) into the bladder so that the consultant can see what the problem may be
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy: a procedure which examines the rectum and lower part of the large bowel using a narrow, flexible, tube-like telescopic camera called a sigmoidoscope
  • Gastroscope: a test which examines the lining of the oesophagus (the gullet), the stomach and around the first bend of the small intestine – the duodenum.  The gastroscope is carefully passed through your mouth into the stomach, and your doctor can check for any disease in the stomach lining.

Our therapeutic services include:

  • Argon plasma coagulation: Used to stop any gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Dilatation
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection
  • Gastrostomy insertion
  • Polypectomy.

Surgical services

Wherever possible, surgery is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) thereby reducing recovery times.  In some cases, day surgery may be appropriate.  Our consultants carry out the following surgical procedures at The Lister Hospital.

  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux surgery
  • Surgery of acute abdominal pain
  • Bile duct exploration and laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Anorectal surgery (including haemorrhoids, fissures and complex fistula)
  • IBS surgery including restorative proctocolectomy
  • Cancer surgery.
