Exercise stress testing
An exercise stress test is performed to provide information about how the heart responds to exertion. It is performed by walking on a treadmill at increasing levels of difficulty, while your electrocardiogram, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored. Electrodes are attached to the chest and connected to an ECG, which monitors the heart’s rhythm/waveform.
The treadmill is started using a set protocol, which increases in gradient and rate every three minutes. This enables the patient’s heart to be monitored during stress, whilst in a safe environment. Blood pressure is also monitored at three minute intervals throughout the test.
The exercise test lasts for approximately 30 minutes with 10 - 15 minutes treadmill time, and additional time allocated for monitoring the patient at rest. After the test, all results are sent to your doctor. Your doctor will call you for a further appointment to discuss the test. If your doctor requests a same day analysis of results, this can be provided.
