Allergy is a hypersensitive disorder of the immune system.
An allergy develops when patients react in an abnormal way to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens. Common allergens include peanuts, house dust mite, grass pollen, cats and medicines.
As the allergy develops, the body’s immune system produces antibodies to fight off the allergen in a reaction called an “immune response”. The next time a patient comes into contact with the allergen, the body ‘remembers’ the previous exposure and produces more of the antibodies, which then causes the release of chemicals in the body that lead to an allergic reaction.
Common allergic disorders include asthma, eczema and hay fever. Allergic symptoms can include sneezing, wheezing, coughing and skin rashes.
At Chelsea Allergy Clinic, a treatment centre of the Lister Hospital, we provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to your condition.
Your treatment involves:
- a detailed initial assessment (a consultation and allergy testing including skin prick testing)
- allergen specific blood tests (if required).
You will be guided through your treatment regimen which may include nasal sprays, antihistamine medication and/or bespoke allergen specific immunotherapy.
We understand the impact allergy can have upon your quality of life and will help you to establish a cause, thereby improving your condition in the most effective way possible.
