Pre admission

The prospect of going into hospital for a surgical operation is inevitably daunting for everyone. Apart from the operation itself, being unsure just what to expect from your stay in hospital can be a worry. At The Lister Hospital you can depend on us to make the whole experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Before coming into hospital, you’ll receive a letter from the Reservations department containing everything you need to know about your visit to The Lister Hospital, including the time and date of your admission and what you need to bring with you.

Contact your private medical insurance company

Before admission, inform your medical insurance company of your forthcoming treatment. You should do this to confirm that your insurance policy covers the procedure and to ensure your private medical insurance provider will arrange for payment.

Obtain the necessary authorisation

Your medical insurance company will provide you with a claim number. They will also advise you on the details of your policy, explaining whether there are any constraints or excesses that you need to be aware of.

Pre-admission assessment

A pre-operative assessment ensures you are ready for any anaesthetic you might need before your operation and facilitates a smooth admission on the day of your surgery.  The pre-assessment nurse will carry out a number of simple investigations which include:

  • Taking your blood pressure, pulse and temperature
  • Measuring your weight and height
  • Screening for MRSA.

If appropriate, further investigations may also be carried out, including:

  • Blood test
  • ECG (electrocardiogram, which traces your heart's activity)
  • Urine test
  • Pregnancy test
  • X-ray
  • Physiotherapy assessment.

The assessment will take between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on which tests are required.

On admission

After arriving at The Lister Hospital you should give full details of your medical insurance, including the claim number, to the admission staff. This must be done prior to your treatment so that we can deal with your insurance company, invoicing them directly. It should be noted, however, that should there be a delay or a refusal to pay for the treatment, you will be liable for the settlement of your bill.

Register online

You can save time by completing your registration online, before coming into The Lister Hospital. You’ll need to register online at least 30 minutes before your appointment time.
