The department has a general x-ray room and a fluoroscopy room.
Plain x-rays are still routinely the first diagnostic imaging modality in the diagnosis of:
Fluoroscopy imaging provides the facility for:
-
Gastro-intestinal - Barium studies
-
Hysterosalpingograms (HSG)
-
Sialography
-
Arthrography
-
Urodynamics – see Urodynamics Section.
The MRI Unit at the Lister has a Siemens 1.5 Testla Avanto TIM Scanner which has the latest technology available in this modality. It provides an extremely comfortable patient experience with the large light bore. This makes it easier for claustrophobic patients while retaining excellent scan quality and reduced scan times compared to open MRI systems. To further enhance patient relaxation a comprehensive music collection is available.
Indications:
-
Neurology
-
Ear nose and Throat (ENT)
-
Musculo-skeletal
-
Abdomen
-
Pelvis – male and female
-
MR Angiography and Venography of the head, spine, abdomen and peripherals
-
Breast (occult tumours and silicone implants)
-
Whole body imaging.

The Lister Hospital’s GE 16 slice CT Scanner’s multi-slice capabilities provides:
-
High resolution imaging with increased lesion conspicuity enhancing the diagnostic value of the scan
-
Greatly reduced breathe hold times to less than 20 seconds
-
Reduced patient time in the scanner
-
Reduction in radiation dose when multi planar reformatting (MPR) is used
-
Scans reported by CT specialised radiologists
-
Patients can be scanned within 24 hours.
Indications:
-
ENT - sinuses, FESS studies and petrous bones
-
Interventional - CT guided biopsies and drainages
-
Neurology - bleeds
-
Oncology - detection of neoplasms and staging
-
Thorax - pulmonary emboli, bronchiectasis
-
Virtual colonsoscopy.
Our two ultrasound machines provide excellent resolution scanning with ‘Doppler’ capability.
Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive examination, free of radiation. All ultrasounds are undertaken by consultant radiologists within their areas of expertise in the NHS.
Indications:
-
Abdominal studies including hepato-biliary, renal tract, pelvic studies, biopsies and drainages
-
Breast
-
Gynaecology
-
Interventional - fine needle aspirations and biopsies
-
Musculo-skeletal including steroid guided injections

Our service is provided by a dedicated highly experienced team of vascular technicians working with our vascular surgeons. Access to vascular ultrasound has vastly improved pre-operative assessment and postoperative follow-up of vascular surgery (e.g. varicose vein) patients. In addition to this, many patients from other specialties require assessment and screening for suspected vascular conditions.
Indications:
-
TIA/Stroke
-
Varicose veins
-
Suspected DVT
-
Limb Ischaemia
-
Claudication
-
Limb swelling
The Lister Hospital has as comprehensive breast imaging service including digital mammography, ultrasound and MRI examinations that are performed by dedicated breast radiologists and radiographers working closely with our breast consultants.
-
We provide a breast screening service for non-symptomatic patients
-
For patients with breast problems we have rapid access to our One Stop Breast Clinics where imaging is followed by a consultation with one of our Breast Consultants.
Digital Mammography
This is the latest technology in this field and includes computed aided diagnosis (CAD). This benefits patients and clinicians with accurate diagnosis, reduction in patient waiting times and increased comfort.
For patients over 35, mammography is proven to be the most accurate method of detecting breast abnormalities.
Ultrasound
If under 35, ultrasound is the best initial test to check breast problems although a mammogram may also be required.
MRI
MRI provides high resolution images which may be required in addition to mammography and ultrasound.
Needle biopsies, fine needle aspirations and localisation
These procedures are undertaken by our breast consultant radiologists after consultation with our breast consultants and are guided by ultrasound or mammography.

There is now an increase in awareness of osteoporosis and its treatment in the elderly population to avoid potentially life threatening complications of fractures. The National Osteoporosis Society recommends Bone Densitometry scanning as the technique of choice in the screening and diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Our scanner uses the latest technology resulting in a very low dose of radiation to the hip and spine. In addition, we now provide Instant Vertebral Assessment (IVA) which involves AP and lateral high resolution scans from the 4th thoracic to the 4th lumbar vertebrae. This gives rapid evaluation of the spine using only 1% radiation dose of a normal lateral spine x-ray. The scans reveal existing vertebral deformities enhancing the clinician’s ability to accurately target patients who need therapy.
The criteria for IVA scans is:
-
Patients over 65 years of age
-
1.5 – 2 inches loss of height
-
A history of vertebral fractures when no x-ray is available
-
Low back pain suggestive of an acute fracture
-
Patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy.
Our new technology supports the Lister One Stop Osteoporosis Clinic, which offers:
-
Fast bone densitometry scan of the hip and spine
-
Consultation with a Consultant Rheumatologist
-
Osteoporosis blood screening test
-
Access to a physiotherapist
-
Access to a dietician
-
Patient information on osteoporosis
-
'Self Pay, Package Price' to include a scan and blood test (excludes Consultant’s fee).
X-ray examination of the jawbone showing every tooth.

Urodynamics is used to investigate the function and dysfunction of the lower urinary tract under fluoroscopy control. This service is undertaken by one of our team of gynaecologists and urologists, assisted by the radiographers.
The Lister has an Incontinence Nurse to support patients.
All investigative tests are performed by our Cardiac Technologist. Referrals for symptomatic patients by GPs and consultants are via outpatient appointments.
Our unit provides:
-
Resting Electrocardiogram (ECG)
-
24 Hour ECG Monitoring
-
Exercise ECG
-
Echocardiogram
-
24 hour blood pressure monitoring
-
7 Day event ‘Recollect’ ECG monitoring.
All routine blood and urine samples are sent to the HCA Laboratory for analysis with the results returned to the referring clinician. We have access to specialised laboratories for non-routine analysis.
Results will be faxed if requested.
