Mr Shaun Matthews performs surgery on young girl whose mouth was locked shut

Mr Shaun Matthews, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at The Lister Hospital, performed surgery on a six year old girl who was suffering from the rare condition Ankylosis, which fused her jaw-bone to the skull.

Lilliana, who had an extrememly limited mouth opening of around 5mm, found eating and brushing her teeth very difficult.  Mr Matthews was able to remove the head of the jaw joint so that the jaw was only held on by muscle and ligaments.  The jaw head is expected to re-grow over time.  Read the full article from BBC News
