Iris Scanning

16 August 2012

news

Iris Scanning has been introduced at The Lister Hospital and its treatment centres to quicken and simplify the identification and registration process for patients.

The initial enrolment will take a digital picture of the iris, using low power LED lighting, which will take pattern data from the iris; this is a completely safe, non-invasive procedure and the picture can be taken from 15cm to a few metres away. Each iris pattern is unique to the individual and will be safely stored on a secure server, behind a firewall, against each patient’s individual hospital identifier.

Iris Scanning technology will lead to a quicker, more efficient registration as a quick scan of the eye will accurately retrieve a patient’s records in a matter of seconds. The initial enrolment for the Iris Scanning will take a few moments, to ensure that a clear pattern is taken from the iris, but once complete, the record can last for several years. Even after some medical and surgical procedures that can affect the shape and colour of an eye, the fine textures of the iris can remain.
