On Saturday 15th October we held the third of The Lister Hospital’s Masterclass educational symposia at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. The Masterclass focused on Acute Care, following the opening of our Level 3 Critical Care Unit at the hospital.


Designed for General Practitioners, the programme presented information about the new Critical Care Unit and provided an informative update on patients presenting with acute symptoms across a range of specialties. The four sessions were hosted by The Lister Hospital's renowned consultants who are not only experts in their field but also excellent teachers.

Dr Craig Carr presented Evolutions of Care, an in-depth look into Intensive Care Medicine, followed by Dr Brian O'Connor 's talk on Respiratory Emergencies. After a short break, Mr Arjun Shankar & Mr Charles Imber presented clinical cases to demonstrate their talk on the Management of the Acute Abdomen. The programme concluded with a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon from our sister hospital, The Portland Hospital.

Educational objectives

The Acute Care Masterclass aimed to provide GP’s with an introduction to the critical care services now available at The Lister Hospital as well as providing an educational update on acute care problems across a wide variety of specialties. Certificates of attendance were provided for attendees.

Dr Craig Carr

Dr Craig Carr MB ChB

Dr Craig Carr is a Consultant Anesthetist and Intensivist who has recently joined The Lister Hospital as Clinical Lead for the Critical Care Unit.

Dr Carr has been involved in commissioning several units including the unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital following the hospital’s devastating fire.

Dr Carr qualified at the University of Oxford, The University of Glasgow and the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

 


 

Dr Brian O’Connor

Dr Brian O’Connor MD FRCP FRCPI

Dr Brian O’Connor is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with a sub-specialist interest in the treatment of asthma. He has been on the General Medical Council Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine since February 1996.

Qualified in Dublin in 1980, Dr O’Connor received his medical degree MB; B.Ch; B.A.O from the National University of Ireland and completed his general medical training at allied teaching hospitals in Dublin until 1988.


With a teaching appointment as Senior Lecturer at King’s College School of Medicine and Consultant in General and Respiratory Medicine, Kings College Hospital London; Dr O’Connor has also held private practice in Respiratory Medicine in London at The Lister Hospital, Chelsea Outpatient Centre and other hospitals within HCA International Limited.

Dr O’Connor is the Medical Director of the Chelsea Outpatient Centre at 280 Kings Road.

 


 

Mr Christopher Chan

Mr Christopher Chan BSc PhD FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Chan is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Barts and The London NHS Trust. He graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital, London in 1991, and was on the surgical training programmes in Cambridge and London. Mr Chan was awarded a MRC Clinical fellowship researching into pelvic floor dysfunction which culminated in a PhD. He went onto further sub-specialist colorectal training fellowships to Sydney, Paris and St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow.

Mr Chan has a broad experience in both elective and emergency, open and laparoscopic general surgery but special expertise in complex colorectal diseases. These include colorectal cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative colitis, enterocutaneous fistula, Intestinal Failure, complex anal fistula, anorectal and pelvic floor problems (incontinence, evacuatory difficulty, constipation) and pelvic floor reconstruction.

He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and he is the author a number of best-selling MRCS books, and has contributed to chapters in major surgical textbooks. Research interests include exploring new techniques for the treatment of faecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction, ultra-low sphincter preserving resections and inflammatory bowel disease.

Mr Chan is actively involved in teaching and lecturing at all levels including MB BS, MRCS, Intercollegiate FRCS examinations and Royal College of Surgeons courses and a past organiser of MRCS revision courses. He is an invited speaker at national and international conferences.

 


 

Mr Arjun Shankar

Mr Arjun Shankar MD FRCS

Mr Arjun Shankar is a Consultant HPB, Sarcoma and General Surgeon at Royal Free and University College Hospitals.

He undertook his surgical training in London based primarily at The Middlesex University College and Hammersmith Hospitals. Mr Shankar’s research into the ‘Development of Colorectal Liver Metastases’ led to the award of an MD by the University of London.

Mr Shankar along with his colleagues, have established a busy private emergency general surgical practice offering the full range of surgical and non surgical techniques including all aspects of interventional radiology and minimal access surgery.

 


 

Mr Charles Imber

Mr Charles Imber MD FRCS Mb Bchir Bsc (Hons)

Mr Charles Imber is a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery as well as liver transplantation. His area of surgery ranges from keyhole gallbladder surgery to more advanced liver/pancreatic resections for cancer.

After qualifying from Cambridge University Mr Imber has had extensive training in all aspects of both open and laparoscopic HPB surgery in London, Cambridge and Birmingham. He is the Head of Services for the University College Hospital Liver/Pancreas team which has published world class outcomes for major benign/malignant surgery and also performs liver transplantation at The Royal Free Hospital.

 


 

Joseph I Curry

Mr Joseph I Curry MBBS FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Paed Surg)

Mr Curry is a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He was awarded the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons medal for outstanding performance in the intercollegiate examination prior to taking up his current post in 2003. During his training he performed a national research project aimed at improving the outlook for babies born with serious abdominal wall defects.

Specialist interests include gastrointestinal surgery and treating children born with abnormalities of the abdominal wall, diaphragm and gastrointestinal tract. Particular expertise includes oesophageal surgery, anti-reflux surgery and lower bowel surgery including children with anorectal anomalies, Hirschsprung’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Mr Curry frequently treats children who have had unsuccessful surgical procedures and has special expertise in larparoscopic surgery even in infants as small as 1kg.

He is widely published and is a member of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons Education and Training committee. He has mentored other consultants in the early part of their careers. Mr Curry holds a postgraduate certificate in medical education from the University of London and was a tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons at Great Ormond Street until 2010.

The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. The Hall is a very short walk from Sloane Square station and is easily accessible from Victoria mainline station.
 

By tube:

Cadogan Hall is only 2 minutes walk from Sloane Square Underground station District and Circle lines). Sloane Square itself is only one stop away from Victoria, which has mainline and additional London Underground connections.

Turn right out of Sloane Square tube station, cross Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall.

 

By bus:

Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including Kings Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers: 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and C1.

Local parking facilities are strictly controlled in the Sloane Square area and there is limited space available. The nearest NCP car park is approximately half a mile away in Cadogan Place (underground car park), just off Pont Street. The car park operates 24 hours a day from Monday to Sunday.

Taxis are numerous in the area and there is a taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the tube station.
