Donald Sammut is an accredited Plastic Surgeon and a specialist Hand Surgeon. His clinical practice is divided between Bath and London and deals exclusively with Hand Surgery. His training in Plastic Surgery and in Hand Surgery has included specialist Fellowships in London, Strasbourg, Paris and Barcelona. For some years he ran a congenital Hand Service in Milan. His particular interests include the reconstruction of hands following trauma or degeneration, Nerve and tendon surgery, and reanimation of the paralysed hand.
He is also a teacher, and trainer, a frequent lecturer at National and International scientific meetings both on Hand Surgery and on Anatomy. He is on Council of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and is involved in the training of surgeons in Hand Surgery, as well as in the preparation and conduct of Hand Surgery examinations.
He has created, and runs, an annual Anatomy dissection course of the Upper limb which, over 25 years, has become established as one of the core courses sponsored by the BSSH.
He has established a charity (www.workinghandscharity.org) running a programme of Hand Surgery in Nepal, and travels there twice a year to reconstruct and reanimate paralysed hands in patients with leprosy, and to teach local surgeons.
