Our support for charities
The Lister Hospital is pleased to support Womb Transplant UK as its official charity.
Around 15,000 women in the UK today were either born without a viable womb or have had to have the organ removed through illness.
Over the past 15 years, a team of surgeons in the UK, collaborating with colleagues in the US, Europe and Turkey, have been researching ways of transplanting donor wombs in a safe and practical manner and giving some of these women the chance to have their own child, naturally. Successful transplants, using different techniques, have already been carried out in Sweden and in Turkey.
The research in the UK is nearing completion and the UK team could be in a position to seek ethical permission to begin operations in the next year or so.
Womb Transplant UK, which has its headquarters at The Lister Hospital, was set up to help the research team achieve its goal by raising funds for the research and providing a valuable information source.
The UK team leader is Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Richard Smith, who has won international recognition for the development of fertility sparing operations for women with early stage cervical cancer.
Mr Smith proposes to use donor wombs to enable a woman to start trying for her own family.
“Until now the vast majority of the research costs have been donated by the team members and friends but our charity, Womb Transplant UK, needs to raise funds to complete the research and pay for the first five operations which will take place in London. We are enormously grateful to all at The Lister Hospital for choosing our charity for special support”
